Dress Code
Ohio Grand Assembly
International Order of the Rainbow for Girls
January 2026

Our dress code helps set IORG apart and reflects the pride we take in being part of Rainbow. Whether at our home assemblies or in our Rainbow travels, we are always representing Rainbow. When representing our organization, we should dress in a manner that is appropriate and respectful of ourselves and others.

At times, dressing with a cohesive look provides us with a sense of polished confidence and helps strengthen our sense of connection and unity as a group. First impressions matter, especially when welcoming guests and prospective members to Ohio Rainbow. By being thoughtful about our attire, we help present Rainbow in a positive, confident, and welcoming way.

1. Rainbow Casual: Service projects, practices, social events, public relations events, fundraising events, traveling, etc. in which another dress code has not been dictated

  • Pants, jeans, and shorts fingertip length or longer absent of deterioration and of proper fit may be worn in addition to skirts or dresses

  • Jeans cannot have holes higher than 2 inches above the knees

  • Shirts and t-shirts with at least a 1 inch strap, and not showing cleavage, stomach, or back below the natural bra line, and absent of offensive language should be worn.

  • Shoes appropriate for the event should be worn.

  • If swimming, a one or two-piece suit may be worn but must be in good taste and not revealing, including no strapless suits. Wear a cover-up and proper foot apparel when coming to or leaving the pool area.

2. Meeting Attire: Stated Rainbow Meetings
2.1. For officers, members, and advisors

  • A dress or skirt and blouse, avoiding black or very dark colors (indigo is acceptable). The length of the dress or skirt should be no higher than 2” above the kneecap from the ground and should have straps that are at least 1” wide.

  • Dress shoes, preferably of light color, with a strap or heel that can be worn without causing an awkward gate. Work/combat boots, flip-flops, clogs, tennis shoes or sneakers are not allowed.

2.2. For guests

  • See section 5.

3. Formal Meeting Attire: Initiations, Installations, and Grand Receptions

3.1. For Mother Advisors, officers and members of the hosting Assembly or District and Ohio Grand Officers

  • A floor or tea length formal dress with 1” straps, a back that does not reveal skin below the natural bra line, and a neckline that is not revealing of cleavage should be worn. A sheer or see-through material is not sufficient for covering cleavage or skin below the natural bra line. A skirt slit in the dress may not extend more than 2” above the kneecap. The color of the dress may not be black but it may have black as an accent color.

  • Crinoline, if worn, should be of a size that is unobtrusive to walking, marches, and chairs or pedestals on the Assembly Room floor. No hoops.

  • Hair accessories should not be a focal point of the outfit.

  • Dress shoes, preferably of light color, with a strap or heel that can be worn without causing an awkward gate. Boots of any type, flip-flops, clogs, tennis shoes or sneakers are not allowed.

  • Tattoos should not be visible, if covering with bandages, please use one that is skin colored.

  • Only a maximum of 4 piercings in each ear is to be worn, without gauged holes or industrial piercings.

    • One small nose stud is permissible. No nose hoops or septum piercings. Other facial piercings must be removed or covered for the event.

3.2. For advisors:

  • See section 2.1 above

4. Grand Assembly Meeting Attire

4.2. For All Grand Officers (including Representatives) and Heralds
Same as the section 3.1 above with the additional clarifications of:

  • The dress must be floor length, white or off white, and absent of any colored decoration.

  • Hair must be a natural color and should be tidy and up, if longer than chin length. Hair accessories should be used for upholding the hairstyle only and furthermore match the color of the wearer’s hair or be clear. This implies that no bows, headbands, or jewels are to be worn, excluding the GWA who may wear a crown.

  • Shoes must be white.

4.3. For Honor Court and Escorts
Same as section 3.1 above with the additional clarifications of:

  • Hair should be tidy and up, if longer than chin length.

  • Dress must be a floor length formal in any Rainbow appropriate color.

4.4. For Grand Choir

  • Formals are preferred, but they also can also wear a tea length or regular length dress that is no more than 2 inches above the knee. Girls who will be participating in floor work on the Grand Floor must wear a floor length formal in any Rainbow appropriate color.

4.5. For Grand Adults
Same as section 3.1 above with additional clarifications of:

  • Hair must be of a natural color. Hair accessories (if used) should be used for upholding the hairstyle only and furthermore match the color of the wearer’s hair or be clear.

  • Dress must be a floor length formal in any Rainbow appropriate color.

4.6. For guests:

  • See section 5.

5. Additional Notes:

  • Proper undergarments should be worn and should not be visible, paying particular attention to materials that are sheer or may be see-through in certain lighting.

  • When traveling to and from a meeting, formal meeting, or Grand Assembly meeting, the Rainbow Casual code may be followed. Upon arrival to the meeting, you should change into the corresponding dress code.

  • Grand Officers should have their hair tidy and up during all Formal Meetings throughout the year, in addition to Grand Assembly meetings.

  • If visiting another Fraternal organization (Masonic, OES, etc.), tattoos and piercings must match that of Formal Meeting Attire.

  • During Grand Assembly sessions, the GWA is the only Ohio Grand Officer who will wear a crown. At Statewide Initiations, the GWA will be the only participating Grand Officer to do so, while Worthy Advisors seated on the sidelines are welcome to wear their crowns.

  • Care should be taken to make sure formals are not too long. Girls should be able to walk without tripping and should not need to lift their skirt in order to walk.

  • Guests (non-members or non-advisors) are encouraged to adhere to the Rainbow Casual or Meeting Attire code, whichever is appropriate for the event. Those who invite these guests should practice good hospitality by informing them of the dress code so they can feel prepared.
